Koesslerhaeusl

Life in Grossarl over 100 Years Ago

How did a miner’s family live in the 16th century? How did they cook and sleep? How were the fields tilled? At the Koesslerhaeusl Museum you’ll find answers to all of your questions. This local history museum is no exhibition in the typical sense. The entire house is an exhibit.
The Koesslers, a mining family, were the original inhabitants in the 16th century of the Koesslerhaeusl. Your hosts, the Hettegger family, took over the renovations of this small house. Particular attention was given to the detail of the older structure so that the renovation deviated as little as possible from the original. The old, preserved antique stove with its wooden chimney and the original smoking room are two of the highlights of the Koesslerhaeusl.

A Visit to the Koesslerhaeusl Museum

From May to October, you can visit the house on Fridays from 1pm to 4pm. Once a week, Oma Hettegger, together with other Grossarl locals, bakes traditional doughnuts for guests and visitors. The atmosphere of the museum is complete when Oma Hettegger beings to sing songs of bygone years in the Grossarl Valley.
